WIDMAN leads off with a volley of UK bass music–equal parts jungle/drum n bass, footwork + hip hop–including the return of japan’s QUARTA330 (from HYPERDUB‘s new 10th anniversary compilation), the storytelling rhymes of KATE TEMPEST (whose UK hip hop will certainly be compared to THE STREETS) + the latest from CHRISSY MURDERBOT’s LOOSE SQUARES imprint. two from PLAID–new from their latest LP + a rare remix of PHOTEK as STUDIO PRESSURE–bridge over to a set of house + techno music, mostly made by producers formerly known for dubstep (such as MARTYN). the most calming track from BEN FROST’s monumental A U R O R A fades out the first hour. HENRY gets the second hour moving with an emotional cut from TEN WALLS–with strings reminiscent of MASSIVE ATTACK’s “unfinished sympathy” and a baritone line from BOOKA SHADE–before moving into a set of house + machine funk (tinged with italo-disco + 80s motifs) including OMAR S’ FXHE imprint + the latest SPECTRAL SOUND signee MARK E. CHET FAKER segways into psychedelic pop/rock for a moment, as the downtempo goodness of BADBADNOTGOOD sets base for a trip into the stratosphere with the most epic from TOOD TERJE.
